The purpose of this project is to conserve and study western chimpanzees and their habitat in Comoé National Park. Specific activities include: (1) determining the population, group size, structure, and home range of three study groups of chimpanzees around the Comoé Research Station; (2) developing local capacity by training Park personnel in biomonitoring sampling, and engaging neighboring villages in the project and Park conservation; (3) determining the main threats to the chimpanzees and main entrance corridors for illegal activities; (4) developing a long-term study, surveillance, and sustainable management plan.
