This project monitors the wildlife trade regarding Japan, significantly contributing to and impacting global issues. It encourages the Japanese Government and relevant sectors to strengthen measures based on results from monitoring surveys under this project.


  • Ivory: Surveys are conducted almost annually for online trading in 2017-2020 and physical markets in 2017-2018.
  • Exotic pets: Surveys are conducted temporarily (online trade and physical markets for reptiles, especially Japanese endemic species in 2017; data analysis and physical markets for precious corals in 2018; physical markets and social trends for small-clawed otters in 2018; illegal trade analysis through Japan Customs records and Japanese media reports and publicly available information in 2020).
